The Ask
In advance of their annual meeting, AAP leadership sought a thoughtful and intentional approach to the opening general session. The selection of Orlando as the host city raised concerns among some members, who voiced questions about how to acknowledge the broader environment surrounding children’s healthcare. AAP asked Projection to help design a stage environment, script, and show flow that would respectfully recognize members’ concerns, reinforce community, and ensure that the message felt inclusive, welcoming, and aligned with the association’s values.
The Idea
Projection proposed a creative concept centered on a fictional town—an imaginative, symbolic space designed to foster safety, openness, and connection. The corner of “Pediatrics Place” and “True Colors Blvd” became the foundation for a dynamic and visually rich environment.
We designed a multi-layered stage using both upstage and downstage LED walls at varying heights, creating four unique “town” looks illustrated in a high-resolution, watercolor style that evoked warmth and childlike optimism. Behind the LED walls, we projection-mapped a cyclorama to deepen perspective and immerse the audience fully in the environment. Scenic elements such as park benches, street signs, and a playset added dimension and reinforced the themes of community and belonging.
To support AAP’s themes of “True Colors” and “Champions for Children,” we developed two complementary content tracks:
-
A video campaign featuring Florida-based pediatricians sharing authentic stories about their work, their motivations, and the power of community. These narratives helped frame the importance of showing up for one another and for the field.
-
A reimagined opening performance, built around a multi-genre arrangement of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors” paired with interpretive dance. Four dancers representing diverse backgrounds and artistic styles guided one another toward embracing and expressing their own unique identities—an artistic metaphor for unity, support, and shared purpose.
Together, the scenic design, content strategy, and performance created an experience that balanced sensitivity, creativity, and celebration.
The Result
A unifying, emotionally resonant experience that honored AAP’s mission and strengthened connection across the membership. Through intentional storytelling, inclusive design, and meaningful artistic elements, the program set the tone for a thoughtful, community-centered meeting and reinforced the profound impact of pediatricians working together on behalf of children and families.
